A contrivance is anything that "explains" the different problems of the story in an unbelievable or unsatisfying way. Some of the most common are having a deity or magical being cause whatever's happening, having it all be a dream, and having something that the hero needs just pop out of nowhere right when he or she needs it.

The plot of Borderlands 2 is a continuation of the plot of Borderlands 1, you meet some old faces and learn some new things about the events of the original.
I don't think that you can really have a story without a plot. Every story needs a plot, or it is just disconnected rambling. Some action movies come close, but even the worst stories have some semblance of a plot, or they wouldn't make sense at all.
