The 39 clues are ingredients for a serum that altered the DNA of the earlier Cahill family. Gideon Cahill discovered a cure for the plague but his cure altered and changed his four children's DNA. Gideon died in a fire that destroyed his lab and his children suspected one another of sabotage. They began their own branches in search for the clues (Lucian, Ekaterina, Tomas, and Janus). Olivia, Gideon's wife had a fifth child no one knew about and that was Madeleine Cahill, founder of the Madrigals. The Madrigals were a gruop of people who tried to reunite the branches together and put back the family. When the other branches came close to finding a clue, the Madrigals would stop them from uncovering it.
