Breed-wise:Arabian, Quarter Horse, Throughbred and Morgan. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In like "Hollywood Terms", Mr.Ed, Black Beauty, Flicka, and Seabiscuit. There is no mention of the breed in the books but judging from the movie (and from Massie's wealth) it might be a Thoroughbred or warmblood sport horse of some kind, and the colour of Brownie in the book is described as 'white' but in the movie the horse is fleabitten grey.
Black is the only acceptable color for Friesians. The FPS stud book requires horses to be tested for red and will not allow any horse with red genetics into the book. The color testing is an effort to rid the breed of the unwanted red or Chestnut coloring.
If you purchase a horse breed book such as horses and ponies by corinne clark, they mention the tempurament of the certain breed which could help you decide which breed is right for you. To me, most people depend on the tempurament that they can handle with for many years in a very strong bond between themselves and their horse.

Lipizzaners, only my book tells me they're from Slovenia.
When a horse is registered, you have the freedom to enter in high-level breed competitions, like at national level and such. Stallions can be entered in a stud book for their breed. Their offspring can be registered only if both parents were registered and of the same breed. It makes a horse easier to sell. There are many reasons why you should register a horse, and there really aren't any bad things about it. It's good to do it anyways.
