The time and the place of a story is considered the story's setting.

In order to figure out the time and the place that the story takes place you should find some major event or detail that occur in the story, then look them up on-line or in a book. If that event or detail was related to an event in history then you will be able to look up more able that event.

If the event or detail does not relate to an event in history then you can just be general when describing the setting (ie. the Cyclops' Island, Jacob's room, house on top of the mountain).
