Rachel asks Meeker not to tell her father that she was down in the jail visiting Cates, the teacher who taught the theory of evolution to his class. Reverend Brown, Rachel's father, is strongly against evolution and strongly for the teaching of religion, so he may see it as a threat if his own daughter is siding with the "enemy."
Rachel went to the courthouse in "Inherit the Wind" to support her father, Bert Cates, who was on trial for teaching evolution in a school. She wanted to stand by him and show her support during the trial.
Bertram Cates
As stated at the end of Act 1 , Rachel retells a story about when she was young and afraid of the dark. In Rachel's story, she tells that she never knew her mother. She also states that she's afraid of her father, Reverend Brown. This story shows Rachel's shaky, unstable relationship with her father. Although she has the same religious beliefs are her father, Rachel has an unseen, rocky relationship with him.
