I think that Aunt Alexandra is not quite yet, but beginning to understand why Atticus is doing things the way he is. Perhaps she is beginning to see that coloured people aren't so degraded as people, compared to the white. Tom Robinson is an innocent man, and even Aunt Alexandra, who would hate to admit, knows that. Ms. Maudie is helping her by comforting and tell her that Atticus knows what he is doing, and he is doing the right thing.
