What effect have Scrooge's past experiences had on the person he has become?

As a child in boarding school the young Ebenezer was more of less abandoned by his father. He would stay at the school as the only boarder at holiday times and even over Christmas. His only companion was his books of Robinson Crusoe and Ali Barber. These meant that he didnt grow up in a loving family, didn't experience the joy and excitement of the Christmas season. It did mean loneliness and the feeling of isolation where only he could make his life feel worth while.

We he left and was apprenticed to Mr Fezziwig The young adult Scrooge saw compassion, he experience a working environment which looked after him and stated to see Christmas as a special time because Fezziwig helped others who had nothing at that time and gave, if only a small amount in the way of food to support them. Sadly Fezziwig despite his humanitarian attitude was made bankrupt. He lost everything and was sent to Debtor's Prison. During this time Scrooge met and fell in love with Belle, The made a promise to marry. Because Scrooge had seen what being nice could bring he focused fully on making money as this appeared to be a safe haven. If you had money then you would not be treated like dear old Fezziwig. THis was not to be the case as his fixation soon took over and Belle saw another love in her Ebenezers life, money! She broke off their engagement meaning that again someone close had been lost. His sister Fan died in childbirth this to impacted on him dearly as it was Fan that had persuaded their father to bring her beloved brother Ebenezer home from boarding school.

With so much loss Scrooge took it up on himself never to allow other close as he felt they would be lost to him. Thereafter he didnt mix with people, work and money making was his only love , his only friend was Jacob Marley who like Scrooge liked to make money. Christmas was nothing to Scrooge except reason to take money off him. he'd never really experienced it in a positive way. To support this we hear the Ghost of Christmas Present say to Scrooge up on their first meeting, You've never known the like of me have you scrooge?) meaning you have never known a true Christmas.

Scrooges life was hard when he was at school. he was boarded out and did not return tohis home until late in his teens.He spent many lonely Christmases in the school when everyone else was at home with family. he lost his sister Fan when she was in child birth and because he believe success grew from money he lost his betrothed Belle who saw he was more interested in money than her.
