Carlson's position at the ranch in "Of Mice and Men" was a ranch worker. He was a no-nonsense, practical man who was known for his toughness and lack of sentimentality. He owned the Luger pistol that he later used to shoot Candy's dog.
"Of Mice and Men" was first published under the same title in 1937.
In the book, Of Mice and Men, George takes Carlson's gun while Curley and the men are busy forming a search party. George later lies to the other men and tells them that Lennie stole the gun.
Mike orcutt is why the flashback happened.
George is the one who took Carlson's gun in 'Of Mice and Men'. He used it to shoot Lennie, as a mercy killing, to spare him from a more brutal death at the hands of the other ranch workers.
