Alice running after the rabbit is the event that causes her adventures in Wonderland to begin.
She sees it pop into a rabbit hole, and, without thinking, follows it in. The rabbit hole goes on for some way, but then dips suddenly, and Alice finds herself falling down a deep well, which terminates in Wonderland. There is no way for her to go back, so she is more or less obliged to explore her new surroundings, which leads her to have some extraordinary experiences, and meet some extraordinary people.

Alice was surprised that the Rabbit took a watch out of its waistcoat pocket, and that it had a waiscoat pocket to take a watch out of....but when the Rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat- pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge.
