It depends entirely on what book you're talking about. You can ask what the plot is, what the setting is, who the characters are, what the characters hope to accomplish, what gets in their way of that hope, and what happens at the end.

Just ask outright. Employers want to answer your questions and usually ask if you have questions at the end of an interview. Ask, "What is the starting salary/wage for this position?" It is tactful and straight forward.
