Jem and Scout are the two children of Atticus Finch, a Southern lawyer. Finch accepts taking a legal case that involves defending a Black man named Tom Robinson. In the trial, everyone speaks their words. Bob Ewell lies and accuses Robinson of harming his daughter, Mayella.

Mayella says the same. Tom Robinson says that he did not harm Mayella in any way, and that he felt "right sorry for her". As usual in the racist 1960s in the South, a black man was put up against a white man and lost, even with Finch on his side.

Robinson was later shot multiple times and killed.

Later in the year, while walking home from their school after a performance, Jem and Scout are almost killed by an anonymous man and Jem's arm is broken. It is revealed that the man was Bob Ewell, and that he died, as well. Scout learns that the man who rescued Jem and Scout is Boo Radley, the man they had been scared of for a long time.

Scout feels bad that she has been doubting Radley all her life because he gave her and Scout their lives.
