During the time of this story, Pueblo Indians were put into reservations to live. Americans wanted the Pueblo people to convert to catholicsicm. This was Father Paul's job, to try to convert them. When Teofilo died, his family wanted to have a traditional funeral, until Leon's wife suggested to have the priest pour holy water over Teofilo's grave so that he could have water to drink in the afterlife. At first, the priest refused, but then he changed his mind. When he poured the holy water over Teofilo's grave he became part of the Pueblo ceremony, adding in a new element. The incite I think he gave was that tradition was very important fot the Pueblo, and that he had no right to try to change it. He realized that their tradition was not just a religion, but their way of life.
