Gatsby tries to recreate the past. At one time he loved Daisy and Daisy him, but Gatsby did not have enough money to get married. So now that Gatsby has a lot of money he tries to recreate everything so Daisy will love him again and they can get married. But you can not recreate the past, it just isn't possible.
