Musil`s "Other Condition" is a particular state of perception in which the world and the self are seen as undivided. It is a soft, watery, mirror-state of being in which things just "are", where there is no good or evil, no Self, a "second home where everything we do is innocent." This "way of being" or "perceiving" is incommensurable with "the real world", the chaotic and "senseless/meaningless" world of differences, differentiations, wants and desires of thoughts, concepts and identities. Musil is deeply interested in exploring this phenomenon because it is in this "state of being" that Musil maintains one may glimpse the source of ethical experience. The image of a (wedding) ring is invoked in Musil`s most famous book "The Man Without Qualities", a deeply symbolic and valuable object, a circle of gold surrounding "nothing". The nothing being the intangible, mystically "founding"...."Other Condition".
