A character sketch is a study device in which the character of a person in a play, novel or story is described, using the text to support all statements. While on the one hand it helps to understand the person by bringing together many strands of the character, it tends to give the impression that people in literature (or in real life for that matter) have a character which never changes. In reality character movement is one of the things that keeps literature interesting. For example, one might cite Juliet's line in act 1 "I'll look to love, if looking liking move" as support for her sexual innocence and her line in act 3 "spread thy close curtain, love-performing night, that runaways' eyes might wink and Romeo leap into these arms untalked of and unseen" as evidence of her sexual maturity. In fact both are true, because between act 1 and act 3 her sexual maturity awakens. Character, especially for Juliet, is probably best expressed in terms of growth and change as well as the resolution of her internal conflicts.
