The size of character is specified by the Font size selected. It is there in the Home tab (word 2010 and 2007).
To change the font size :-
STEP 1- Select the text you wish to edit. (holding down mouse left button and dragging across the text)
STEP 2- With text selected, go to Fonts size option under the HOME tab in ribbon- Clicking it will open up a menu list of font sizes.

There is no maximum
Font face is all about the choice in font character design while Font sign has to do with the increase or decrease in character size.
nope there is no way of doing it if you are using windows character map though you can increase their size after inserting them, for example in power point you can change their size by selecting and dragging in the direction you want to stretch but the best way would be to go and google third party character map.
