The jewels that Faust gives Gretchen, they are a symbol of Gretchen's impurity. It is also stated that the jewels were taken by a priest. This can be interpreted that Gretchen is no longer the good church girl she was before but an impure one so to speak. Blood is also a recurring symbol.
