Each student must figure out what "central idea" they want or need to focus on in an essay or term paper. For every book, article, short story, etc., you must decide on the author's central idea. Sometimes, though it can be difficult to prioritize to just one main idea.

It helps to get a family member or friend to listen as you condense and tell about a story in no more than 3 sentences. As you tell the person about the story, listen to yourself--what is the main idea you communicated. For example, In x book, the main character felt conflicted between going away from home to attend college, or go to a local college so she could help with her disabled mother. She loved her mom, but wanted her independence. The story revolved around conflicts in many areas where the character needed to choose her loyalties. In the end, she acted with loyalty toward her family and was glad she did because the next year her mother died unexpectedly.

How you speak about the main idea will need polished in your written text. Add supporting evidence for your points. In the example given above, you could list other conflicts that showed the character acted responsibly despite the conflict.
