Duncan lives in Forres. Or possibly the battle referred to in the first scene is at Forres. Either way, the text is not abundantly clear about it.

In the Shakespearean play, Macbeth [d. August 15, 1057] interviewed two murderers about the killing of Banquo and Fleance. He wanted the murder done away from his palace at Forres. The two murderers met up with a third that Macbeth apparently had hired separately. The three waited in the park near the palace at Forres. In that park, they succeeded in killing Banquo. But Banquo's son Fleance managed to escape.
The town mentioned as the site of the battle Macbeth fights in in Act 1 is Forres, which is way up north in Scotland. Ross comes and reports another battle way down south in Fife, which is a county not a town.
Duncan appoints him to that title, after it was stripped from the previous Thane. The former Thane of Cawdor was stripped of all titles and executed after joining a Norwegian invading force which was defeated at Fife. Macbeth at the time was at Forres, nowhere near Fife.
It's a tragedy.
