Her and her husband search for days to find a necklace like the one she borrowed and find one for 36,000 francs at which they spend 4 days scraping up enough money to pay for. When the woman returns the necklace her friend is annoyed at how long it took and doesn't open the case to look at it. The woman and her husband must fire their servant and live in 10 years of crippling poverty where he works 3 jobs and she does the heavy housework in order to pay off the debts the necklace caused. The woman then runs into her friend who doesn't recognize her until after she tells her the story about the necklace and how they spent 10 years paying off the debt and it changed them. Her friend clasps her hands and tells her that the necklace she lost was merely costume jewelry that had no value at all.
