A theme is anything really like love, war, family, home coming, dance etc... It's what the article is about. All written or spoken pieces have a theme to it. However, universal themes are themes that everyone can relate to and understand. For eg: a person might listen to a speech by an American about how great their country is, what goods it has done etc. The listener might be in a time of war in his country so he isn't going to care much about that speech.... Whereas if the speech was generally about pride in one's country etc.. He will be interested as it is universal and he can relate to it because he has a certain amount of pride for his country.

The difference between a subject and a theme is that a subject is just a noun; whereas a theme is a statement (with a subject and a verb). You can infer a theme from details in a story that the author implies. An author almost never says what a theme is.
