The story you are thinking of is called "Night in Funland". My GF and I just spent about 2 hours researching a similiar question - I had misremembered the title as "A night at the carnival". I remembered the monkey and that it was the title story in an anthology where I had read it. The collection also included "Flowers for Algernon", "The Most Dangerous Game" and "One ordinary day with peanuts". An excellent book, unfortunately my library doesn't have it.
