Ichabod Crane is the superstitious schoolmaster, Katrina Van Tassel is the beautiful young woman whom Ichabod loves, and the Headless Horseman is a ghostly figure said to haunt Sleepy Hollow.
The fictional character Ichabod Crane originated from Washington Irving's short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" published in 1820. In the story, Ichabod Crane is a schoolteacher who encounters the Headless Horseman in the village of Sleepy Hollow.
Because it is the first example of american short story. It demonstrates the americanization of the american literature, lacking of class differances, history etc. It depicts the abundant lands of the young America.
Washington Irving writes the story of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent... Crayon creates the story of Legend of Sleepy Hollow... Deidrich Knickerbochker is the one who actually wrote down the Legend of Sleepy Hollow which was found by Crayon (presumably). "A pleasent, shabby gentlemanly old fellow" was the person who actually told the story to Knickerbochker. Within the legend, the characters tell stories they've heard/read about the headless horseman....
Both stories pose the question of the American identity and what it is to be a true American; however, each plot takes on a totally different approach to doing this. While â??The Legend of Sleepy Hollowâ?? pursues the complexity of religious ideologies in early colonial America, â??Rip Van Winkleâ?? uses a hyperbole of a man who sleeps as British and awakens after the American Revolution as an American. Although he is in the exact same place at the time he wakes as he was at the time he fell asleep, his nationality had changed. Washington cleverly pursues the philosophical question of what it is that makes us what we truly are.
The horseman is not identified in Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow. In he prequel, A Hollow Sleep by Chris Ebert, he is identified as Heinrich Luneberg. An alternative interpretation would be that since it is implied Brom Bones may have dressed up as the Horseman to frighten Ichabod Crane, that could his 'identity.
