In the original Anderson tale- not Gerry Anderson but Hans Christian, it was a sermonizing thing against Race Mixing- The Mermaid- no name in the original ( Hah , here"s an expendable character) makes love to the Viking Prince- and woosh- first she loses her voice- then her life- dissolves into the ocean well ahead of schedule- it was explained that Mermaids live for 300 years in normal circumstances and at the end of this time become foam on the water- for that reason no Mermaid bodies are ever found or fossils recovered- a neat science-fiction touch to explain lack of evidence. It was against Race- or more accurately species-mixing.
