Ares, was said to have killed a nameless giant, a son of the Echidna,(Ekhidnades=Echidna's son), who possessed serpents in place of feet. According to Nonnus in his Dionsyiaca, the only reference for this myth, Cronos used this giant to defend himself against Zeus while they were at war, apparently as a living shield against Zeus' famous thunderbolt. The brief passage in which the myth is described is as follows:
"[Ares] brought low such another, Ekhidna's son, the gods' enemy, spitting the horrible poison of hideous Ekhidna. He had two shapes together, and in the forest he shook the twisting coils of his mother's spine. Kronos(Cronus) used this huge creature to confront the thunderbolt [of Zeus], hissing war with the snaky soles of his feet.... This masterpiece your brother Ares killed."-Nonnus, Dionysiaca 18.274
