As far as the National organization is concerned:

- There is a World Scouting Organization. They do not have control over the national scouting organizations.

- Boy Scouts of America

- Local Councils (about 200 of them)

- Councils are divided into districts.

- Districts contain individual units (Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, Venture Crews, Sea Scout Ships)

Within a BSA Troop:

- The unit is owned by a Charter Organization (Church, School, Club). The Charter Organization has a rep to the unit.

- Troop Committee with a Chair.

- Subcommitttees and other possitions (treasurer etc)

- Scoutmaster (appointed by the committee)

- Assistant Scoutmasters.

- Senior Patrol Leader - an elected scout who organises and runs troop activities.

(The Scoutmaster's main job is to support the SPL).

- Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders.

- Other possitions of responsibility (guides, librarians, quartermasters etc)

- Patrol Leaders (lead groups of about 8 scouts)

- Assistant Patrol Leader(s) - appointed by the PL.

- Scouts
