A myth used to explain things otherwise unexplained at that time (for instance, the creation of the Cosmos) and it generally involved supernatural powers or beings. One might say they were the building blocks of religions. They do not have anything in common with contemporary "urban myths", which are often exaggerated stories or even boastful lies.
