When the gentlemen refer to the poor not wanting to go to the work house (remember the work house treated people appallingly almost like criminals ) they cite that many would rather die first. Scrooges reply was simple , "They better had then and decrease the surplus population". This literally come back to haunt him when he asks the ghost of Christmas Present if tiny Tim be spared his death, the ghost replies "he better had then and decrease the surplus population"

Bob Cratchit, Scrooge's employee, asked him to donate to the poor during Christmas time. Scrooge initially refused but eventually agreed to donate after his encounters with the ghosts.
The gentlemen seeking a charitable donation from Scrooge describe the poor of the time as being destitute, without warmth and food to eat and for many who Scrooge states should be in the work house the gentlemen state they would rather be dead
That he was collecting for the poor. He hoped that Scrooge would be generous at this special time. Scrooge questions wheather the prosions, workhouse and treadmill were still in ooperation. he is told they were. Scrooge is pleased to hear this as he is contributing to their opeation in his taxes

Scrooge and Marley were business partners who were known for lending money and collecting debts. They were involved in financial transactions and were described as being ruthless and unsympathetic in their dealings.
