If you are referring to the brush and the salinas river, it is because Lennie kills Curley's wife and was told by George to go back to the brush if he gets in trouble so that is where he goes. He is told in the first chapter, showing the inevitibility that he would get in trouble. :)
George and Lennie left their job in Weed because Lennie's uncontrollable strength and fascination with soft things led to a misunderstanding and a dangerous situation. They had to flee to avoid trouble with the law.

Lennie, if you don't already know, loves soft things. As you read in the book, Of Mice and Men, many times Lennie will pick up a mouse (dead or alive) a pet it. Until, accidentilly he will kill it because Lennie is unnormally strong! Lennie doesn't mean to hurt anything, he is like a child and needs comfort. So in order for Lennie to get comfort, he feels a womans dress, she screams, and Lennie holds on to it because he is scared, and doesn't reallize what was going on, and he doesn't want to lose his soft object he has found. And as i go off-topic, the girl claims rape and Lennie gets in to trouble with the police. George manipulates Lennie by taking advantage of Lennie's simple-mindedness and dependence on him. He often convinces Lennie to do things or not do things by appealing to Lennie's trust in him and his desire to please George. George can be both loving and controlling towards Lennie, using their close bond to control their situation.
