Nwoye was seen associating with the Christians. After being threatened by Okonkwo, he joins the Christians and volunteered to go to Umuofia where a school had been set up to to teach young Christians literacy. Effectively, Nwoye had abandoned the gods of Okonwko and his fathers.
In the story Nwoye's mother told him, the sky and the earth were originally very close together and would hold conversations. However, because the humans were displeasing the gods, the gods decided to separate the sky and the earth with darkness. The darkness represented the anger and disapproval of the gods toward humanity.
Nwoye's main character trait is his gentleness which is like his grandfather Unoka. This causes him to have difficulty dealing with his father. He enjoys his mother's stories more than his father's stories. His gentleness causes him to eventually convert to Christianity.
