PIE means persuade, inform, or entertain. The author may want you to do something such as in Upton Sinclair's book. The Jungle. Sinclair was responsible for getting the Food and Drug Administration to get meat inspected. Or the author may want you to be able to identify leaves or flowers. Sometimes the author just wants you to be able to laugh at a character like Pippi Longstocking.
