the significance of the cakes was that by giving jem a slice of the big cake instead of his own small cake like scout and dill was that the big cake was a symbol of him becoming an adult in an unspoken way from ms. maudie. this was right after the jem was so devastated by the tom robinson being charged guilty to raping mayella and he became so upset about the unfairness of the charge since he was obviously innocent. Hope this helped :)
Miss Maudie always used to bake three little cakes for the children. In this part of the novel, she lets Jem have a slice of the big cake to show that he is now older and more mature. This supports the theme of growing up.
The two little cakes and one large cake in Maudie's house represent the contrast between the poverty she lived in and the wealth of the people around her. The small cakes symbolize her humble lifestyle, while the large cake symbolizes the extravagant lifestyle of the people she worked for. This simple detail highlights the economic disparity and social divide in the society she lived in.
Where's the trick? :)
Large tunnels in cakes can be prevented by shaking the pan before you bake it to take out most of the air bubbles causing those tunnels.
Miss Maudie Atkinson baked a large cake for Jem and two smaller ones for Scout and Dill.

Round individual cakes are baked in cupcake tins or in small round pans. One can also bake a large sheet cake, then cut individual cakes from the larger sheet with round biscuit cutters of various sizes.
