Stories are as old as civilization. The earliest recorded stories we have are oral poems (like the Oral Histories of many peoples), epic poems (like the Epic of Gilgamesh and Iliad), and theological narratives (like The Bible). The development of the novel is much more recent, starting with the Tale of Genji in Japan around 800 years ago. The modern novel was finally perfected in the 1700s.
