Apathy - or emotional indifference to a serious incident or crime is a fairly common theme in ( Message) short stories- It can happen very easily in real life- a Woman can be mugged or raped and passersby ignore the whole thing- this was the infamous Kitty Genovese incident in the sixties, hundreds of people witnessed the crime but were scared stiff to report it to the police ( one wonders why)./ a somewhat related short story was the Little Match Girl- in some of the illustrated book versions ( taking place in modern times) cars and pedestrians go by- everybody is happy with Yuletide shopping- and a little girl is near death. one is fiction, the other fact. There are sadly- and this is NOT entertainment- a goodly number of popular songs dealing with themes of this sort.
