Montag tells Faber to leave town and head towards the river where he will meet up with a group of intellectuals who are dedicated to preserving and sharing books. Faber also advises Montag to stay hidden and avoid using his real identity.

Then Montag tells Faber how to get ris of his scent to the Hound won't go to Faber's house. Then Montag runs to the river where the Hound loses track of him and eventually meets Granger who tells him that there are others like himself. They watch the news as the people and police that were after him kill an innocent man whom they said was Montag to save face. Soon, a bomb destroys his old town.
The part the river played in Montag's escape was it was his means of getting way from the city and in his hopes, going to the country. The river is also one of the ways he is able to confuse the Mechanical Hound.
Clarisse and Montag meet when Montag is walking home from work and encounters Clarisse standing by her porch. Their interaction sparks Montag's curiosity and sets in motion a series of events that lead him to question the society he lives in.
