Roger Chillingworth was Hester's husband, with whom she had lost contact. He sees her upon the scaffold, and rejects all ties to her. However, he perceives the true identity of Dimmesdale, Hester's lover, and goes on to torture Dimmesdale with his presence, while expending great effort to keep Dimmesdale alive in the guilt of his iniquity. He makes Hester promise never to reveal his identity as her husband. When he dies, however, he leaves a significant portion of his wealth to Pearl, who goes on to live a high-society life in England.
When Hester meets Roger Chillingworth on the peninsula, she tells him that she is going to make Reverend Dimmesdale aware of Chillingworth's true identity (Roger Prynne - Hester's former husband.)Hester says to Roger Chillingworth "I must reveal the secret. She had an affair with Dimmesdale, the minister, while she was still married to a man, Roger Chillingworth, who had been in the woods for a long time. She did not love Chillingworth (thats not his real name by the way, but the narrator does not remember it and that is what Chillingworth addresses himself as.) she was in love with Dimmesdale. She got pregnant and little Pearl came out. The Magistrates questioned who was pearls father but she never told. it was not really a crime, it was more of a sin i guess.
Roger Chillingworth was captured by the Indians because he had been seeking revenge on Reverend Dimmesdale, which led him on a relentless pursuit to manipulate and torment the minister. This vengeful behavior eventually caught the attention of the Native Americans, who saw his actions as unjust and punished him for his cruelty.

Roger Chillingworth is not physically present during the negotiations for his ransom with the Native Americans. He has been captured and held prisoner by them, so his whereabouts would be with the Native Americans during that time.
Mr. Wilson had been keeping vigil by the bedside of Governor Winthrop, who was dying. Hester had just learned she would be allowed to keep Pearl. Roger Chillingworth had been at the bedside of one of his sick patients.
Roger Chillingworth is Mr. Dimmesdale's physician. His real name is not actually Roger Chillingworth, but changed it to be so, so that nobody would find out that he's Hester's husband who has been gone for so long. He also does not want to be associated badly because of her sin. So, he poses as Dimmesdale's physician, while, for the most part, he's mostly looking for the dark secrets of Dimmesdale's heart and mind.
Dimmesdale realizes Chillingworth is not the friend he thought he was. He decides to dismiss Chillingworth later on and not take in his remedies. Hester basically told him that Chillingworth is her husband and he's out to discover his secret.
In "The Scarlet Letter," when Chillingworth enters the minister's room, he sees Arthur Dimmesdale sleeping with his shirt unbuttoned, revealing the Scarlet Letter that Hester Prynne has embroidered on his chest. Chillingworth becomes convinced that Dimmesdale is indeed the father of Hester's child, Pearl, as he had suspected all along.
Hester Prynne is a mother who has been estranged from her husband, Chillingworth. Hester is an outcast and can't provide well enough for Pearl, her daughter. She knows Chillingworth has the ability to help them. She hopes to gain a better life for herself and Pearl by talking to Chillingworth.
