The Montauk Monster was an unidentified carcass that washed up on a beach at Montauk, New York in 2008 and made world headlines. The carcass went missing before it could be properly examined. A palaeozoologist suggested that the carcass was that of a raccoon with its upper jaw missing, its body having been misshaped by decomposition and water movement. The show Monster Quest apparently examined the remains after they were recovered in a more decomposed state in 2009 and concluded it was the remains of a dog.
