The aspect of deception and betrayal is most important to the events of the story in "The Cask of Amontillado." Montresor deceives Fortunato by pretending to be his friend, enticing him with the promise of Amontillado, all while harboring a deep-seated desire for revenge. This atmosphere of deception and manipulation, heightened by the celebration of the carnival season, sets the stage for Montresor's sinister plan to entomb Fortunato alive.
In "The Cask of Amontillado," the celebration is a carnival called the Carnival of Venice. It is a traditional festival filled with masks, music, and revelry. This celebration provides the perfect backdrop for the dark and suspenseful events that unfold in the story.
A carnival is organized by the different events it has in it
The events are happening during a carnival that's supposed to be fun and happy. Montresor tricks Fortunato into going to this catacomb cellar like place and that's where Fortunato is killed. But, before they get to the catacomb part of the basement its like some sort of wine cellar...I think.
The actual time of year is not mentioned; but Montresor says it happened during the supreme madness of the carnival season. This could be taken as sometime prior to the beginning of the Lenten season in the way that Mardi Gras is held. This means it might be February.

The story called The Cask of Amontillado has a brief scene where Montresor meets Fortunato and tricks him into going to his home to taste a special wine purchased by Montresor. The true setting of the story is in the catacombs under Montresor's house. The carnival is simply one scene.

Carnival is a festive season which occurs immediately before Lent; the main events are usually during February. Carnival typically involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus, mask and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations, which mark an overturning of daily life.Carnival is traditionally held in Catholic and, to a lesser extent, Eastern Orthodox societies. Protestant areas usually do not have Carnival celebrations or have modified traditions, such as the Danish Carnival or other Shrove Tuesday events. The Brazilian Carnival is one of the best-known celebrations today, but many cities and regions worldwide celebrate with large, popular, and days-long events. The Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is the largest carnival in the world, according to the Guinness World Records.[1]
