The tone of the opening to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland can be described as calm and dreamy. Alice is portrayed as bored and curious as she daydreams by the riverbank while her sister reads.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland begins with Alice sitting by a riverbank in the real world. She then walks through a rabbit warren, which quickly gives way and becomes a very deep well, which she falls down into Wonderland. She lands in a corridor full of doors, which is where she first changes size. She is still in the corridor at the end of the first chapter.
A catEven the Duchess sneezed occasionally; and as for the baby, it was sneezing and howling alternately without a moment's pause. The only things in the kitchen that did not sneeze, were the cook, and a large cat which was sitting on the hearth and grinning from ear to ear.
In the opening scene of Alice in Wonderland, Alice and her sister are sitting by a riverbank and her sister is reading a book which Alice considers very boring. She's feeling sleepy when she sees a white rabbit run past wearing a waistcoat and looking at a pocket watch. Alice is consumed with curiosity so she chases after it but falls down the rabbit hole and lands in Wonderland.
When Alice first sees the Mock Turtle in Wonderland, he is sitting on a rock. They had not gone far before they saw the Mock Turtle in the distance, sitting sad and lonely on a little ledge of rock, and, as they came nearer, Alice could hear him sighing as if his heart would breakOther than that, the author gives no indication as to the location of the scene, except that there is some implication that they might be near the sea shore, as that is where the Lobster Quadrille must be danced, and the Turtle and the Gryphon give a demonstration of it, and their conversation is full of references to the ocean and to various sea creatures.
In the book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Alice first encounters the Cheshire Cat in Chapter 6, Pig and Pepper. He is sitting by the fire in the Duchess' house and smiling broadly. After Alice leaves the house, she sees him again, sitting in a tree, and talks to him for a while. The next, and last, time she meets him is in Chapter 8, The Queen's Croquet Ground, where only his head appears, much to the consternation of the King of Hearts.
The first line in Lewis Carroll's book, Alice's Adventures in wonderland is, "Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, `and what is the use of a book,' thought Alice `without pictures or conversation?'"
