The narrator of To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout Finch, lives with her father, Atticus, and her brother, Jem. Later on in the novel, Scout's aunt, Aunt Alexandra, stays with the family to help raise Scout to become a proper young lady.

The Finch family settled in Alabama due to their ancestor, Simon Finch, coming to the area as a fur trader and establishing a successful farm. The family continued to reside in Alabama for generations, with Atticus Finch being a prominent lawyer in the town of Maycomb.

They were so sad because the bird kept repeating after them that they shot at it with the Cunningham's hunting rifle after Boo came out with a blanket to lay over the dead body of Mr. Avery. Chapter one of "To Kill A Mockingbird" has the two main characters of the book, Scout and Jem, now adults arguing on where their story should begin. They decide to begin by telling a bit of the history of the Finch family and why they ended up settling in this particular area. After the historical intro, we are introduced to Dill and how the siblings came to meet him. Finally, we learn about Boo Radley, a mentally handicapped man, whom the Finch children have mythologized.

Finches Landing was founded by Simon Finch, the first of Scout's ancestors. Simon was a fur-trader and apothecary who fled from England to escape religious persecution and established a successful farm called Finches Landing.
