Huck picks up Jim, a runaway slave, while they are both trying to escape their respective situations. Huck finds Jim hiding on Jackson's Island while he is trying to avoid his abusive father and decides to help him in his quest for freedom.

Huck held up his pants with a piece of rope tied around his waist as he searched for ways to keep his pants from falling down. This makeshift solution was necessary because he did not have a belt or suspenders.
Huck's pap was an abusive drunkard who neglected and mistreated Huck. He kidnapped Huck and locked him up in a cabin, aiming to extort money from him. Huck eventually fakes his own death to escape from his abusive father.

Huck was ambushed by his father, who was waiting for him. His father had been hiding in the woods and had been looking for Huck. Huck's father was drunk and angry, and he proceeded to attack Huck and take him back to their cabin.
