In Shakespeare's Macbeth Duncan is the good old king whom a young and evil Macbeth murders in order to get the crown.

Anyone who had read the original story in Holinshed's Chronicles (a very popular historybook in Shakespeare's time) would have known that in the original story Duncan is not so old, and a rather poor king; and also that Macbeth ruled for ten good years before he turned into the evil tyrant that the play shows him as all along.

So anyone who knew the background would have been aware that Shakespeare was changing the story to make a point.
