Who killed Casper Gutman?

In Dashiell Hammett's _The Maltese Falcon_ and the original 1931 film, Gutman's hired gunman Wilmer shoots him. In the 1941 film with Humphrey Bogart, the police are called on him (as in the other versions), but his death is never mentioned.

In the novel "The Maltese Falcon" by Dashiell Hammett, Casper Gutman was killed by Wilmer Cook. Cook shot Gutman multiple times during a confrontation at the end of the story.
