He's competitive and always wants to beat everyone, which may make him a bit narcissistic and insensitive to the needs of others. He is undoubtedly a prideful and careless individual. Yet, we only have Montresor's claims that Fortunato as a man who had caused him a thousand injuries to go by in terms of whether these transgressions were intentional or just part and parcel of a pretty clueless person. It doesn't require much of a stretch to imagine Fortunato as a man who doesn't weight his comments carefully before their utterance. As a result, he probably offends many, though not necessarily intentionally. Unfortunately, some, like Monstresor may have mistaken a naturally insensitive demeanor for blatant, intentional disrespect.
