Another contemporary opera was Charpentier"s Louise, which ends with the lovers being evicted by the Father of the Girl, and wghile bittersweer avoids the use of violence or suicide. I believe the philosophical last line from the man Louise"s boy friend is (It"s a Big Town) which is optimistic. He"s speaking of Paris, while neither happy nor sad this is better than suicide pacts and murders.
