The entire trial comes from Tom running from the Ewells. After he supposedly 'rapped' Mayella he ran off. Later in the trial he is questioned by Atticus about why he actually ran.
"Mr Finch if you were a negro like me you'd be scared too" (261).
Because he ran he was brought before the judge and jury and accused of rape. If you read the book you should know what happened.
Anyway Tom was considered guilty although the facts pointed to the fact that he wasn't guilty. He was only sentenced because he was a black man living where blacks were not appreciated.
