Why did gar face shot ranger in the book the underneath?

Ranger the dog was stolen by a cruel man named Gar Face, as you know. Gar Face hunts animals for bragging rights and respect purposes. Ranger is a Bloodhound, also good for hunting purposes. Gar and Ranger were on a hunt when Gar was about to shoot a pregnant Bobcat. Ranger had obviously felt bad for it, so he took a valiant action and stood in front of the Bobcat. Gar shot at the Bobcat but Ranger was in front of it, so Ranger was shot in the leg. Although, Gar had no concern at all. He just says, "Stupid Dog."

In the book "The Underneath," Gar Face shot Ranger as an act of cruelty and power to send a message of dominance and fear. Gar Face viewed Ranger as a threat and wanted to demonstrate his control over the situation by hurting him. Additionally, Gar Face's violent actions were fueled by his anger and desire for revenge.
