Captain Jaggery's excessive pride and need for control led him to react violently when confronted by Mr. Hollybrass. The argument threatened his authority and exposed his insecurities, causing him to lash out in an attempt to regain control and assert his dominance.
Mr. Hollybrass reported that one of the barrels of salted pork had been shorted by two pounds.
The murder of Hollybrass remains an unsolved mystery, with speculative theories but no concrete evidence. It is a fictional character from Agatha Christie's "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd," a novel where the murderer is eventually revealed to be the narrator, Dr. Sheppard.
In the novel "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle," Charlotte offers to retrieve a piece of jewelry from Mr. Hollybrass's cabin for Captain Jaggery in exchange for Captain Jaggery's help in clearing her name of the false accusations against her.
The crew insisted that Captain Jaggery and Mr. Hollybrass be described as heroes in the ship's log to maintain a semblance of order and authority aboard the ship. By portraying them in a positive light, the crew aimed to uphold the captain's reputation and prevent potential repercussions for their actions. This description also served to reinforce loyalty among the crew and quell dissent, ensuring that their own positions remained secure in the face of the captain's strict leadership.
Charlotte and Zachariah deduced that Jaggery killed Mr. Hollybrass through a combination of evidence and intuition. They noticed inconsistencies in Jaggery's account of events and found clues that pointed to his involvement, such as the location of Mr. Hollybrass's body and Jaggery's behavior. Additionally, their conversations with other crew members revealed suspicions about Jaggery's tyrannical nature and previous threats he had made. This gathered information led them to conclude that Jaggery was responsible for the murder.
He is like a friend to captain Jaggery.
Captain Jaggery
Well, really there was two cooks. Zachariah was the first until they thought he died when he really didn't and then Fisk took over for awhile until Jaggery got thrown off ship by the waves when trying to get Charlotte out on the bowsprit and then Zachariah came back and took over but in the log Charlotte wrote that both Hollybrass and Jaggery got thrown off board heroicly in the storm when they didn't Hollybrass was murdered by Jaggery!
