Adams thinks the hitchhiker is beckoning him to his death because the hitchhiker's strange behavior and ominous warnings create a sense of impending danger. The hitchhiker's repeated statement that "I can see you" and his insistence on being picked up despite Adams's doubts all contribute to Adams's growing fear that he is being led into a dangerous situation.
Because you never know who picks you up. It's dangerous for both the hitchhiker and the person who picks him/her up. Some people pick up hitchhikers to hurt them. They put a knife or a gun at their faces or their heads and tell them:"Give me your money" or "Give me your wallet" or "Give me your purse" and the hitchhiker has no choice but give the driver their money otherwise they get killed. They knock out the hitchhiker and rape them. They stab, shoot or strangle the hitchhiker to death dispose of them in the woods. Sometimes they tie them up and hang them in the woods and the hitchhikers are found dead. Sometimes it's the hitchhiker who kidnaps, robs, knocks out, rapes and murders the driver. Many hitchhikers and murdered by drivers who pick them up and many drivers are murdered by hitchhikers they pick up. It's dangerous for both the hitchhiker and the driver.
Douglas Adams was an author and playwriter. He is most known for his 5 book trilogy series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. After being enormously successful on BBC Radio, it was made into a BBC television show. A more recent movie was completed after his untimely death.
Oh, dude, "The Hitchhiker" is a short story by Roald Dahl where the main character Patrick picks up a hitchhiker who turns out to be a ghost of a man who died in a car accident. The story ends with Patrick realizing he narrowly escaped death and the hitchhiker disappearing. So, like, the conclusion is basically Patrick being shook by the whole ghostly encounter.
A man leaves his mother to go on a road trip for a few weeks. She tells him to be careful and to not pick up any hitchhikers along the way. While driving, he gets into an accident. It is dark and he can't see where he is going. Though he is dead, he doesn't realize it. Soon, he starts seeing this creepy guy following him. The man thinks the guy is a hitchhiker who wants a ride in his car. He tries to drive away from the guy but he keeps appearing out of no where saying, "Halooo." He tries telling people about it but they don't see the guy or believe him. He picks up a hitchhiker and tells her about the creepy guy, but she thinks he is crazy and leaves. The man tries calling his mother on the payphone to calm down, but the lady who picks up tells him she is not home. She is sick with stress in the hospital because his son died. He soon realizes that he had died in the car accident and the creepy guy following him was death.
