Atticus seemed to enjoy the story about Church with Calpurnia, but Aunt Alexandra didnt.
Atticus reprimands Scout for using offensive language to describe the church congregation. He is angered by her use of the derogatory term "trash" to refer to the people in Calpurnia's church. Atticus believes in treating all individuals with respect, regardless of their background or status.
Scout tells Calpurnia's account of Atticus allowing her to visit her church to get away from the white community for a while. This creates an argument between Atticus and Alexandra because Atticus believes that Calpurnia deserves his trust and autonomy in raising the children in a way that's best for them, while Alexandra feels that Calpurnia is overstepping her boundaries by taking the children to her church.
The children visit the First Purchase African M.E. Church while Atticus is away. This is where Calpurnia, their African American housekeeper, takes them to attend Sunday service.
When Scout and Jem return from church with Calpurnia Aunt Alexandra is sitting on the porch. Aunt Alexandra came in order to be the woman influence for Scout
They were surprised and some of them were angry. Scout and Jem are white children and they have their own church to go to. Some of the black people resented the fact that the children would go to Calpurnia's church when they have one of their own. Others were willing to accept the children.
Calpurnia belonged to First Purchase Church ( a black church)
its not calpurnia, its Reverend Sykes. he says that when Calpurnia takes scout and jem to the blacks church.
When Scout and Jem went to Calpurnia`s church, they saw there wasn`t any hymn books to read the songs. People looked at the two white children as if they were aliens and one women even said they had no right to be there but Calpurnia pointed out to the women that they were all worshiping the same God.
The Aunt wanted to fire her. Aunt Alexandra feels Calpurnia is a 'bad' influence on Scout. Atticus says that he won't because Calpurnia is part of the family and he couldn't have gotten on without her. She also wants her to be fired, because she is black.
Calpurnia's church is called First Purchase African M.E. Church. It is an African Methodist Episcopal church located in Maycomb, Alabama.
